The Homeless Ministry.

[ 1 ] February 11, 2010 | Milan Ford

In a bit of a writer’s block these days, so today, here’s an excerpt of my new book, 83 Things I Wish The Black Church Would Stop Doing.

I realize the following is a rather bold request.
But it’s still worth a try.

If the HOMELESS you are serving are still HOMELESS after encountering your HOMELESS ministry month after month…

…then maybe it’s time we try doing something else.

Contrary to popular opinion, the church is not in the business of providing fish.
Or frying fish for that mattter.

But rather to teach (and train) others how to catch fish.

What are some of the first things you would deem absolutely necessary if I asked you to teach someone how to fish?

Boats? Yes.
Fishing Rods? Yes.
Nets? Sure.
Bait? Absolutely.

Notice what is not listed above? Fish.

Our churches must become (and be known) as agents of RADICAL change, rather than just TEMPORAL ones.

Believe it or not, radical change can actually cost less than temporal change, if one chooses to invest in it early enough.

You only need to purchase a boat or rod once if your goal is to teach and train. However, you will have to purchase fish every day if your goal is to only feed temporarily.

Quick Observation: There is never enough money for temporal change.

I am sure we all can name several agencies and organizations in our communities that are great at providing some TEMPORAL change to those who are homeless.

Instead of becoming them.
Support them.

Our goals are very different.
And our funding must be as well.

Hope you enjoyed that. To purchase your copy of my book today, click HERE!

Powerful! I only hope to be part of the solution rather than an addition to the problem.
