Learning From The Mouse.

[ 4 ] August 11, 2009 | Milan Ford

Here’s a little known fact about me: For about two years, I served as a cast member / guest relations assistant at Disneyland (Anaheim, California). By far, one of the best experiences of my entire life.

I was reminded of my time with the world’s most famous mouse the other day when asking a ministry leader / web designer a question about adding a particular site feature to a blog I was working on.

I saw the site feature on his blog, and simply fell in love with it. So I decided to send him a DM (via Twitter) and ask how do I go about adding it on mine. The following reply is what he sent to me:

“google ‘add author area’ in wordpress”

Translation: look it up and you should be able to figure it out on your own.

As a fellow leader (and survivor) of ministry, I know how limited one’s time can be at times. And as somewhat of an Internet / social media aficionado (in the eyes of about three people I know), I realize the ability to discover new information is more prevalent than ever before.

However, something about this exchange disturbed me that day. It quickly reminded me of one of the core values every cast member at Disneyland was taught to observe and practice as much as possible:

Never POINT someone in a direction that you can TAKE there yourself.

One of the greatest honors you and I can receive as leaders is for someone to stop and ask us for directions. I truly believe there is a strong connection with our unwillingness (as leaders) to sacrifice our time, with this generation’s unwillingness to embrace our faith.

(In my opinion) today’s social media age has helped to cultivate leaders…who no longer lead.

We often confuse online support with actual support. The re-tweeting of a cause with the actual prayer or financial support needed for a cause. I wonder what our churches would look like if leaders today were willing to lay down their crowns…and exchange them for some ears?

Very big ears.
