Coney Island.

[ 2 ] May 20, 2008 | Milan Ford

So I read on yesterday that there are plans to shut down New York’s Coney Island. As the husband to a Brooklyn native, the news is quite shocking to my wife. Not so much to me though.

(shhh, please don’t tell her I said that).

Outside of riding the world-famous Cyclone, I must say I wasn’t that impressed. I had heard so much about it from other New Yorkers, but when I arrived I saw what seemed to be a ghost town.

The rides were old.
The concession stands seemed unsanitary.

Makes me wonder what may have caused such a decline. What decisions were made (or avoided) that could have led to Coney Island flourishing, rather than declining?

It is my prayer that we as church leaders always seek to make decisions that help our churches flourish.

Being simply remembered as the birthplace of a hotdog (Nathan’s) is just not enough, not exactly the greatest benchmark.

Hi my name is Jenny and I am from Australia, and I found it very interesting, when I read your blog on unity in the body, and from where I stand unity whthin the church is not only a colour issue, it runs right through all lines. Its is a shame but it is true, we are attacking each other for everything. Please keep it up and lets all remember that Jesus said the world would know us for the love that we have for each other.

As a native New Yorker, I’m with your wife – I was really bummed when I read this news a week or so ago. But I know that the Coney Island I will miss has not existed for many years now. I mourn for the part of my childhood that it represents, not the dirty, dark, dangerous place that you saw that is about to be torn down. It is a shame, but the shame is that it was allowed to decay, not that what has been inevitable for years is now about to come to pass.
