Career Over.

[ 1 ] April 22, 2009 | Milan Ford

“For me, basketball is over” – Dikembe Mutumbo.

Those five words were given by the 18-year NBA veteran on last night after suffering an knee injury in the first quarter of Game 2 in the playoff series between the Houston Rockets and the Portland Trailblazers.

For those of you (like me) who follow the NBA, I’m sure you will agree that Mutumbo has had a very decent playing career. One that he should be proud of. However, after watching him (now on crutches) speak to a reporter that evening, I asked myself: Is this the way I (as a leader) want my career to end?

Due to injury? Absolutely not. And while there is nothing anything you or I can do from preventing every accident along the way, I also realize that some injuries are prone to happen…when you stay around long enough.

Let’s all be sure to be cognizant and submissive (as leaders) to the greatest and most consistent change agent on earth:

Time.
